about

“The Parts That Showed” is the sophomore album release by the Viking Moses, recorded on the Oldham family farm in central Kentucky by Paul Oldham, featuring the talent of Spencer Kingman (of Spenking), John McCauley III (of Deer Tick), Cody Brant and Jacob Soto (of Flaspar) and Evelyn Weston.

This is a unique story of a teenage part-time prostitute who spends her earnings buying ice cream for neighborhood children, and of the man who obsesses over her from afar, told from both angles, and spanning their lives. However, the approach of this story intends to transcend taboos and judgment to offer the listener a vast spectrum of the emotion and ideals of the characters, setting and circumstance.

This album was written with the dream that it might one day be sung by Dolly Parton, and so pays tribute to her work and inspiration.

Track Name: Lucky Numbers
"Lucky Numbers" by Viking Moses.

It chilled her when our eyes met, standing there and so wet. "O, please do not go yet!" I cried. But how they leave in numbers, I screamed, "Damn useless summer!" so loud my back and lungs hurt. They live in lucky numbers. I push my head through phonebooks. O, I do my homework!

Track Name: Old Buck Knife
"Old Buck Knife" by Viking Moses.

I took out my old buck knife and pressed it beneath her eye, and I turned her on her hands to see that she understands I'm not to be taken lightly. I said, "Please don't mind my saying, Ma'am, but you have lovely eyes tonight."

I sat back to let her stand. She stood on her own then ran through the woods up to my truck. I could hear as she got in, as she let my truck door slam, and she screamed as she could do, "You gonna come, or ain't you?!"

Track Name: One Arm Around The Sinner
"One Arm Around The Sinner" by Viking Moses.

"When I was a small girl, when I was a small girl I rode to any town they told me of. Now dirty towns, you own me, dirty towns, you own me, and love is a sore upon the tongue.

"And when I was a small girl, and things began to swell, I put my body right to work and let the people pay me well.

"With one arm around the sinner, and one stretched toward the sea, I leave my troubles to the street. I leave my troubles to the street.

"So long Arizona! And hold on San Antonio! With legs spread wide, in we go. With legs spread wide, now, in we go!

"Now hold on Arizona! And so long San Antonio! With legs spread wide, in we go. With legs spread wide, now, in we go!

"For when I was a small girl, and things began to swell, I put my body right to work and let the people pay me well."

Track Name: Sole Command Of The Day
"Sole Command Of The Day" by Viking Moses.

Bright colored cars, bent to hell, and laid up in the yard. A finger, there, through the golden hair on my arm.Katie's suntanned, too. Playing outside is all that we do. We wet our clothes with the garden hose to keep cool. No
talk of boys. Today we get away with all that we can. Don't wait is the sole command of the day.

Hit the heel and toe. Sweat rolls as we go store to store. Our pockets heavy, but we still want more from the day. On our way back home, we look ahead and see, there, on our right, Spencer took the tractor from a building site, and he drove it. So we flagged him down. He let us up, and we rolled through the town. All the luck, and not a cop around to control us!

Spencer dropped us home. We jumped, waved and cheered as we watched that boy go. I hope he makes it back around the liquor store, before they find him. Katie turned to me and said, I'll make you a wish if you make one for me. In all my life, I ever felt so free as with him." Your burning hole, I said, I wish upon it all the power of gold, and don't doubt that a decent town would like to hold it!

I laughed, and grabbed her, and pulled her down. She smiled at me. Katie held off the whole damned town, and now she's holding me.

Track Name: Jones Boys
"Jones Boys" by Viking Moses.

Bow clouds, let the sun up today. Muddy paws and their wet noses all know where the other girls play, after school, behind abandoned houses.

But I walk, and I turn me a trick. i never hear them once they flip me over. Matt and Jason are a couple rough kids, but after work I'd like to call them over.

Bow clouds, let the sun up today. Muddy paws and their wet noses all know where the other girls play, after school, behind abandoned houses.

The sweet song of the ice cream man is calling from beyond the pond where the road bends. I'll put a snowcone in a young boy's hand, and a candy cigarette for each of his friends.

Bow clouds, let the sun up today. Muddy paws and their wet noses all know where the other girls play, after school, behind abandoned houses.

Track Name: On And On In Sunsets
"On And On In Sunsets"

And no, we haven't lived yet, on and on in sunsets. And how just might she know this when on each encounter, she'd run each time I found her and mask her shame in laughter, frightened, teary laughter, dreadful, screaming laughter, shameful, laughing horror?

Track Name: Life Empty Eyes
"Life Empty Eyes" by Viking Moses.

I don't wish to better your life. It won't make it better. It won't make it life. But we know that I borrowed you twice, and both times you lent it with life empty eyes.

I no longer wander your town. No longer a whimper, no longer a frown than a foot seven steps to the ground, no longer a gift or a look handed down.

And I don't know my own head from toe, so I sit back and laugh at all life as we know until life in you here starts to go, and beauty stays beauty with me on the floor.

And O, dance, all the laughs, while I hold you in my own loving arms! O, dance, all the laughs, while I hold you in my own loving arms after!

Track Name: Little Bows
"Little Bows" by Viking Moses.

I miss my little bed, where my mother'd come and bless my cornered head. And I miss my little shoes, and the good things we'd do out by Papa's shed. And I miss my little friend, the one they told me was pretend, and how we fooled the day, how we fooled the day into coming back for us again, with our little bows, and our parts that showed, I want to hear you say, "That a girl, babe, don't limit your life, growing old!"

So this grown man followed out, a better looker than the crowd, behind an open stare he lifted from some dick on a stool to take with him, and to wear. But I swear that what I saw, was a broken spirit fall when i saw him leave, when i saw him come into the night, and chasing me with my little bows, and my parts that showed, all I hear him say is, "That a girl, babe, don't limit your life, growing old."

And now I miss my little bed, where my mother'd come and bless my cornered head, and ain't it mine? Ain't it mine? And I miss my little shoes, and the good things we'd do out by Papa's shed, and ain't it mine? Ain't it mine? And when a grown man is looking at me with his money, I miss my little cat rubbing on my door, my little bedroom door, painted with my name across is, halfway hanging, halfway resting on the floor. And I miss my little friend, the one they told me was pretend, and how we fooled the day, and how we fooled the day into coming back for us again with our little bows, and our parts that showed. I want to hear you say, "That a girl, babe, don't limit your life, growing old!"

Track Name: Under The Soda Sky
"Under The Soda Sky" by Viking Moses.

Under the soda sky, the sticky, dark and bubbly soda sky, dripping like the night you came to town with eyes and skin and blood the deepest brown, the sticky, dark and bubbly, deepest brown, dripping like the night you came to town, watching,
while the words you said, I wrote as we sat up in our shifty little raft, dripping like the night you came to town.

Hats and jerseys lifted one by one, lifted high, we looked at what we'd done, nervous air held tightly in our lungs, and if they could see, the whole damned world would come with mouths gaping, laughing, making fun, nervous air held tightly in our
lungs, but when eyes met, our clothes were never found, pressing skin, we let our lips slip down, dripping like the night you came to town.

Track Name: Ma Moses
"Ma Moses" by Viking Moses.

They're standing over where we sleep, there they stand, and shake the law. We owe them anything they'll take. No, we don't owe these men, at all! But they smell the bodies in the air, and they hear the moaning from the walls. Dance and laughter fills this place, there's more here now, than ever was!

When you stand here in my room, could it kill you just to laugh? And when your hands are over me, have the decency to ask.

"Ma'am, it's all here in the book, and I hate to say the time has come, so get up now, and get dressed, grab your kids, and come along."

By the wear here on my skin, sir, and by the blood here in my tongue, you'll take your papers someplace else, and keep your damned hands off my young!

And when he came around the bed, I grabbed the gun right off his belt, and put it up against his head. He dropped his hands, and then he knelt. Not a tear, no not a strain, you'll never know how good it felt, standing over blood and brains, to send that man straight to his hell!

Track Name: Tattle And Tell
"Tattle And Tell" by Viking Moses.

We cupped our ears when he told her, never moved only stared when he'd tear into her late at night, howling, "O, no woman of mine is gonna go running off, crying!"

Then she'd laugh, put him down on the hardwood, belly down, knee in back, on the bedroom floor, "Cry 'uncle'," she said, "or there'll be more!"

Off we run, off we run through the back yard over lumber and barrels and broken cars. Princess heard, so she ran, and she chased us, but her collar and chain around her neck kept her from us.

Muddy paws, muddy paws, they'll tell on you! How they'll tattle and tell where you been, every time! O hell, ain't no use in lying. O hell, there's no shame in what we'd done.
